Secretary of State George P. Shultz acknowledged today that he made no progress in reviving the stalled Middle East peace process while in the region but said Israel and Egypt showed a “genuine preoccupation with the importance of peace.”

Shultz, speaking to reporters after a two-hour meeting with President Hosni Mubarak before flying on to London for talks with Jordan’s King Hussein, said a commitment to peace should “help us find our way to the direct, bilateral negotiations that are the vehicle for peace.”
