A small plane flying in rain and snow crashed into the woods and killed three members of a Southern California family, the Federal Aviation Administration and Alaska state troopers reported Monday.

Pilot James Landes, 26, his wife, Lourdes, and their 4-month-old daughter, Nicole, of Upland, died when their single-engine Piper PA-18 Super Cub crashed Sunday on a flight from Homer to Anchorage, troopers said.

The plane was reported overdue in Anchorage at about the time an emergency locator signal was picked up.

Search planes found the wreckage Sunday evening in a wooded area near Eagle Lake 11 miles north of Homer.

Troopers said a helicopter landed and found no survivors.
