Local News in Brief : 2 Killed in Stalled Car
A partly disabled subcompact car burst into flames, killing two people and seriously injuring a third, when it was struck by a big-rig truck Tuesday morning the northbound Santa Ana Freeway in East Los Angeles.
The 19-year-old driver and an 18-year-old passenger in the Honda Civic were burned to death in the collision north of Downey Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Lujuanna Lopez said. A 19-year-old passenger was in serious condition at County-USC Medical Center with severe burns.
The Honda carrying the three teen-agers, whose identities were not immediately released, stalled about 2:55 a.m. in the far left lane of the freeway, Lopez said. The driver got the car started again and was beginning to drive slowly across the slow lane to the shoulder, when the car was struck by the truck.
