The Federal Communications Commission voted 4 to 0 Tuesday to retain a geographic restriction that assigns call signs beginning with “K” to radio and television stations west of the Mississippi River and “W” to those east of the river. The agency’s mass media bureau had proposed the change last February to expand options available to broadcasters in choosing the series of letters that distinguish their stations. The geographic distinction has been in place since the early days of radio.
