Two Oceanside residents were seriously injured in a car accident early Wednesday morning at North Santa Fe and Mission avenues, Oceanside police reported.

Hugh Haroldson, 71, of the 4900 block of Yuma Avenue, and Hadley Boone McGaughey, 77, of the 5200 block of Rosewood Drive, were taken by Life Flight to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

Haroldson was listed in critical but stable condition with severe head injuries and broken legs. McGaughey suffered a broken right leg and severe head injuries and was in serious but stable condition following surgery, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The accident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. as the two men stood near the roadway exchanging information after a noninjury accident involving their vehicles, Sgt. Steve Scarano said.

A car swerved to avoid the men and the auto behind it, driven by 20-year-old Tommy Robertson, struck them, Scarano said.

Robertson, a Marine based at Camp Pendleton, was not cited. Robertson and his two passengers were not injured, said Scarano.
