A funeral Mass for slain Haitian presidential candidate Yves Volel was delayed and had to be moved to another location after thousands fought for space inside Port-au-Prince’s Notre Dame Cathedral, preventing relatives from taking Volel’s casket into the church. The Mass and burial took place later in the day in Jacmel, Volel’s hometown 70 miles from the capital. Witnesses have said that plainclothes policemen killed Volel, 54, a center-left candidate, while he was giving a speech in front of police headquarters Oct. 13. Meantime, former President Jimmy Carter arrived in Haiti for meetings with government officials and civic and religious leaders.
