Cityhood for Mission Viejo
Whenever I ask people why they are against cityhood for Mission Viejo, they invariably answer that they are “sure” that taxes will “inevitably go up.” The word “inevitably” is theirs, not mine. I do not believe that our taxes will go up if we become a city.
In the first place, one of the reasons I was able to afford to live in California, and in Mission Viejo, was the passing of Proposition 13, which limits the amount of annual tax increase on our homes. The new City of Mission Viejo could not change that even if it wanted to.
In the second place, Proposition 62, which was passed just last year, gives me a further guarantee that my new City of Mission Viejo cannot raise any new taxes without a two-thirds approval of all the voters.
Just look at the record of the Mission Viejo Community Services District, which was formed two years ago. The directors will turn over to the new City of Mission Viejo a surplus of almost $3 million.
