Orange County’s earthquake relief center in La Habra will close its doors this week, along with two centers in Los Angeles County, disaster relief officials announced Sunday.

The La Habra center, at 165 E. La Habra Blvd., will close Wednesday at 6 p.m., California Army National Guard spokeswoman Roxane McIntyre said.

“Basically, we’re closing them because of the turnout ratios,” McIntyre said. “The numbers have been dropping excessively since the opening.” Only 49 people showed up at the La Habra center on Saturday, she said. About 2,100 people have sought assistance at the center since it opened.

The center in Los Angeles’ Boyle Heights also will close Wednesday, while the Rosemead center in the San Gabriel Valley will close today at 6 p.m.

A new center will open in Long Beach at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Silverado Gym at 1600 W. 32nd Street, and four existing centers in Los Angeles, Whittier and Alhambra will remain open indefinitely, McIntyre said.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency opened seven disaster assistance centers two weeks ago for people whose homes or businesses were damaged in the Oct. 1 earthquake, which measured 6.1 on the Richter scale, or by one of its aftershocks. The agency’s assistance hotline (1-800-338-7693) will remain in operation from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
