A janitors union Monday sued the maintenance company hired by the San Diego Unified Port District to clean Lindbergh Field terminals, charging the company with failure to live up to a bargaining agreement. The Service Employees International Union, Local 102, filed the lawsuit in Superior Court against Calhoun Maintenance Co.
Earlier this year, Calhoun recognized Local 102 as the bargaining agent for about 75 janitors who clean the airport terminals. Eliseo Medina, director of Local 102, charged that Calhoun has refused to bargain with union.
The main stumbling block in the talks between the two groups is wage increases, Medina said. According to Medina, airport janitors earn $5.39 an hour and have not received a pay raise in six years. The Port District awarded Calhoun a contract on July 1, 1986. Medina said that janitors who work for the Port District earn as much as $9.83 per hour.
Calhoun officials could not be reached for comment.
