An 11-day-old boy became the second Canadian baby this month to receive a new heart in transplant surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Mitchell Boyd, who was born Oct. 15 with hypoplastic left-heart syndrome, was in critical but stable condition after a five-hour operation performed by Dr. Leonard Bailey, hospital spokesman Dick Schaefer said. Mitchell suffered from the same heart condition as Paul Holc, also of Canada, who was delivered by Caesarean section Oct. 16 and immediately given the heart of a baby born with virtually no brain. Mitchell’s parents are Leigh and Bob Boyd of St. Albert, Alberta. The hospital refused to release information about the donor.
