A 43-year-old woman was hit by a car and killed Wednesday as she stood at a bus stop. The driver attempted to flee on foot when his car became disabled shortly after the accident but was chased and caught by witnesses, police said.

Police spokesman Bob George described the accident this way: At 8:15 a.m. a man driving a station wagon ran a red light on westbound North River Road at Calle Montecito and hit a city pickup truck that was turning onto North River Road. The station wagon then careened onto the sidewalk and into an enclosed bus stop where Maxima Hernandez of Oceanside was standing.

George said witnesses told police it appeared as if Hernandez “was trying to get out of the way, but didn’t know which way to run.”

Hernandez was pronounced dead at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, Deputy Coroner David Lodge said.

Witnesses reported the vehicle was traveling about 50 m.p.h. when it hit Hernandez. George said the driver made no attempt to stop until a flat tire halted the car several hundred yards away. The driver got out and ran into a field, but was chased and caught by construction workers who witnessed the accident.

Fernando Solorio, 19, of San Luis Rey was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run driving, vehicular manslaughter and felony drunk driving.
