An acrimonious acronym debate ended when the Santa Clara County supervisors voted unanimously to drop SCAT as the name of the new light-rail transit system.

Santa Clara County Area Transit was officially replaced by Santa Clara County Transit, no nicknames.

The board opted to get out of the name business after drawing embarrassing national attention with its last choice.

“The board voted to bury SCAT. It was the ecological thing to do,” joked Supervisor Susie Wilson after Tuesday’s vote.

The problem arose a month ago when supervisors picked the name for its meaning “to move fast.” The board was not immediately aware that an alternate definition is “excrement left by an animal,” but residents soon began to ridicule the choice.
