Former champion Larry Holmes may fight Mike Tyson next year for the undisputed world heavyweight championship, the World Boxing Council announced.
The WBC agreed to sanction the Tyson-Holmes bout, even though the 38-year-old Holmes has not boxed in 18 months. It declined, however, to reinstate Holmes to the top-10 contender ranking he held when he retired after failing to regain the International Boxing Federation title from Michael Spinks in April 1986.
Tyson and Holmes are scheduled to fight in January.
