Brad Gilbert downed Anders Jarryd of Sweden, 6-2, 6-3, Wednesday and moved into the quarterfinals of the $923,000 European Community Championships at Antwerp, Belgium.

In other matches, Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia advanced by turning back Jean-Philippe Fleurian of France, 6-1, 6-4, and Tim Mayotte ousted Joakim Nystrom of Sweden, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Gilbert, ranked 12th in the World, will meet the winner of today’s all-Swedish match between second-seeded Mats Wilander and Jonas Svensson. Mecir will face either John McEnroe or Argentina’s Martin Jaite in Friday’s quarterfinal, with Mayotte going against either top-seeded Ivan Lendl or Henri Leconte of France.

Mecir, No. 5 in the world, had few problems in taking just over an our to beat Fleurian, 22, a late replacement for ailing Emilio Sanchez of Spain. Fleurian upset Tim Wilkison in the first round.

Gilbert was never pressed by Jarryd, who looked sluggish from the outset and put together his best tennis when it was too late in the second set.

Mayotte relied on his accurate serve and well-timed approaches to the net to outlast Nystrom. Mayotte made numerous unforced errors to lose the first set but came back strong to win the second and broke Nystrom’s serve in the fifth game of the final set.

Nystrom, Jarryd and Fleurian each earned $15,000, despite their early exit. Wednesday’s winners are guaranteed $50,000 for reaching the quarterfinals.

McEnroe, who won the ECC last year, is seeking the richest tennis trophy in the world--the $1 million gold and diamond full-sized ECC racket. It goes to the player who wins the Antwerp tournament three times in a five-year span.

Top-seeded Barbara Potter needed only 52 minutes to eliminate No. 13 Michelle Torres, 6-3, 6-2, in the third round of a $75,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Indianapolis.

In another upset, unseeded Anne Smith beat No. 8 Alycia Moulton, 6-1, 6-2, in a match that lasted just 50 minutes.

Among other seeded players, No. 3 Helen Kelesi of Canada beat Manon Bollegraf of the Netherlands, 7-6, 6-3, and No. 9 Elly Hakami defeated Marianne Van Der Torre of the Netherlands, 7-5, 6-1.

Third-seeded Patric Kuhnen of West Germany beat Stephane Bonneau of Canada, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the quarterfinals of the $75,000 Bergen Open at Bergen, Norway.

In other second-round matches, second-seeded Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia defeated unseeded Peter Lindgren of Sweden, 7-5, 6-4, and Leif Shiras upset eighth-seeded Richard Matuszewski, 6-3, 6-4.

Andrei Olkhovski of the Soviet Union, a qualifier who upset fifth-seeded Todd Nelson, 6-2, 7-5, in the first round, advanced when Stefan Eriksson of Sweden withdrew because of an eye infection.
