Clouds of locusts flying across the Mediterranean from Algeria are threatening fruit- and vegetable-growing areas of southern Spain, Spanish officials said. Farmers have been alerted, and planes are standing by to spray chemicals. Spain also received a warning from Director General Edouard Saouma of the Rome-based U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization. He said desert locusts have been reported in Algeria and Morocco over the last two weeks. Spanish weathermen saw a hopeful sign, reporting northwesterly winds that could make it difficult for the locusts trying to reach the Spanish coast.
