The House Appropriations Committee approved an amendment that would block deportation of spouses and children of illegal aliens who are eligible for legal status. The action, approved 27 to 11, forbids the Immigration and Naturalization Service to spend funds on the deportations. The amendment, sponsored by Rep. Edward R. Roybal (D-Los Angeles), was attached to a temporary spending bill to keep the government operating, which went to the House floor.
