NHL Roundup : Roy’s Absence Doesn’t Hurt as Montreal Tops Detroit

Share

Mike McPhee scored with 5:29 left at Detroit Friday night to lead Montreal to a 5-4 victory over the Red Wings, giving the Canadiens a four-point lead in the Adams Division.

It was the first of eight games the Canadiens will play without No. 1 goaltender, Patrick Roy. Roy drew a suspension for using his stick to slash a player in a game two weeks ago.

The Red Wings jumped in front with two goals in the first eight minutes, but the Canadiens scored the next three goals to assume their first lead.

The Red Wings kept bouncing back to tie. It became a 4-4 game late in the second period when Joe Murphy, who scored his first NHL goal in the first period, scored his second for the Red Wings.

Roy’s replacement, Brian Hayward, kept the Red Wings in check the rest of the way and McPhee, knocking in the rebound of a shot by Petr Svoboda, made him a winner.

Detroit goalie Glen Hanlon deserved a better fate. The first Montreal goal bounced in off his leg and the second caromed in off his stick.

Winnipeg 3, Washington 2--Dale Hawerchuk scored on a power play at 2:15 of overtime at Winnipeg to give the Jets the victory.

Hawerchuk took Paul MacLean’s pass in the corner, skated behind the net and jammed the puck into the short side to beat goalie Clint Malarchuk.

The Jets opened a 2-0 lead, but the Dave Christian and Dale Hunter scored goals 21 seconds apart in the last four minutes to send the game into overtime.
