Doberman Keeps Rescuers at Bay

United Press International

A critically injured motorist’s dog kept her rescuers at bay for an hour after she slammed into the back of a city bus Saturday, authorities said.

Mary Joy, 35, of Los Angeles was traveling about 35 m.p.h. on Venice Boulevard near Clarington Avenue when she skidded on the rain-slick street into a stopped city bus about 5:15 p.m., police said.

Joy’s Datsun crumpled on impact, police said, and her face hit the steering wheel, inflicting major head injuries.

Paramedics were called immediately, but it took them an hour to get to Joy because her large Doberman pinscher sat snarling and snapping on her lap.

Joy was listed in critical condition at Brotman Memorial Hospital.
