A New Zealand rugby player has been jailed for six months for biting off an opponent’s ear.

An Auckland court heard Latu Vaeno, 29, testify that he had broke his collarbone early in the game and bit off the ear after the other player burrowed into his shoulder.

“Biting someone’s ear off is not within the rules of the game...”Judge John Cadenhead said as he imposed sentence.

Vaeno’s counsel said: “Somehow the ear must have got into Vaeno’s mouth and the pulling motion of the opposing player resulted in it coming off.
