Woman Named Envoy to Iraq

President Reagan named State Department Middle East expert April Glaspie as ambassador to Iraq today, making her the first U.S. woman ambassador in that region of the world.

Glaspie, 45, whose nomination must be approved by the Senate, is director of Jordan, Lebanon and Syrian affairs and had been deputy chief of the U.S. mission in Syria. She also has served in Tunisia, England and Egypt and at the United Nations. Glaspie, who is a native of Vancouver, Canada, is a graduate of Mills College and Johns Hopkins University.
