Local News in Brief : Candidate Forum Planned

Share

The Boston-based Christian Science Monitor Syndicate has agreed to produce and televise a proposed series of presidential candidate forums in Santa Monica next year.

David E. Morse, president of the syndicate, said potential corporate sponsors have been contacted to help pay the estimated $1-million to $1.5-million cost of the forums, in which members of the audience would react to candidates’ comments with a hand-held electronic device known as the “Quick Tally.”

Carl Rogers of Venice, one of the organizers of the event, is scheduled to ask the Santa Monica City Council next week to help raise--and guarantee--$150,000 for the project. The city so far has been reluctant to commit money, but has offered free use of the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

Candidates have not yet been asked to commit to the forums, although several Republican and Democratic contenders have indicated interest, Rogers said.
