Irvin D. Smith has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer of Applied Biosystems Inc., Foster City.

Smith previously was a divisional vice president and general manager of the analytical systems group of Abbott Laboratories. Applied Biosystems said the chief operating officer post had been vacant.
