Local News in Brief : Charity Relay Race Starts
The third annual Race to Walk, a 30-hour relay to Santa Barbara and back with wheelchair racers and able-bodied competitors raising money for spinal cord injury research, began today at the steps of Los Angeles City Hall.
City Councilwoman Joy Picus fired the starting gun, sending two wheelchair racers and their police escorts on the first leg of the race.
The race, with an estimated dozen participants, half of them disabled, is scheduled to continue non-stop to Santa Barbara, where the competitors will turn back.
The finish line is at Warner Park in Woodland Hills, where the racers are expected to arrive at 3 p.m. Saturday.
