Local News in Brief : Teacher in the Running

A fourth-grade teacher in Alhambra was among four finalists for the 1988 California Teacher of the Year announced Friday by state Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig.

Lorna Mae Nagata, who teaches at Fremont Elementary School, has her students write and illustrate picture books, which are laminated, bound and donated to the school library.

The other finalists are Barbara DeBow, a social studies teacher at Ball Junior High School in Anaheim; Michael Jordan, an automotive teacher at Ramona High School in San Diego County; and William Coate, a sixth grade teacher at James Monroe Elementary School in Madera County in central California.

The winner receives a cash award of $15,000. The three runners-up will receive $5,000 each.
