Indian Troops Intensify Search for Tamil Rebels
Indian troops fanned out in intensive searches for Tamil rebels in northern and eastern Sri Lanka on Friday, but they said the rebels’ top commander eluded soldiers who captured his hometown.
One Indian soldier was killed when a land mine planted by rebels exploded near the eastern port of Trincomalee, an Indian spokeswoman said. Four soldiers were wounded in an attack at the village of Sambaltivu, she added.
Earlier, Indian soldiers captured the northern fishing village of Valvedditturai, the birthplace of Velupillai Prabhakaran, head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
