President Reagan, in his weekly radio broadcast, pledged America’s full support to Philippine President Corazon Aquino and warned Congress that the United States “cannot afford to cut corners” in aid to Manila. “The single most serious threat to survival of democratic government in the Philippines remains the Communist insurgency,” Reagan said. He noted that Aquino has survived five attempted coups since coming to power in February, 1986, and added that “division between (the Philippine) government and its armed forces can only help” the rebels. Reagan has asked for $260.8 million in aid to Manila this year.
