City officials Monday honored some of the 800 volunteers, most of them area high school students, who spent the weekend painting over graffiti around Los Angeles.

“This weekend is just the beginning,” said City Councilman Nate Holden, who handed out certificates of appreciation to volunteers in front of City Hall. “We will not be intimidated,” he said, referring to the gangs responsible for much of the graffiti.

The volunteers used about 1,000 gallons of beige paint to cover up graffiti at 60 sites around the city, said Cathy Berger Kaye, director of youth leadership programs for the Constitutional Rights Foundation, one of the sponsors of the campaign.
