Shanghai authorities have punished a young man who refused to do military service by barring him from work and education for two years, a local newspaper said in a rare report of such dissent.

Tao Wenrong, an unemployed paint factory worker, tried to fake bad eyesight during his military health check and berated officials for calling him up, the Xinmin Evening News said in its Saturday edition, which reached Beijing on Monday.

Young people in China register for military service each year, and suitable candidates are then drafted for three to five years.
