A medical examiner reported that driver Bill Fitzgerald, a racing partner of actor Paul Newman, died of a broken neck when he crashed his car during the St. Petersburg Grand Prix sports car race Sunday at St. Petersburg, Fla.
Fitzgerald, 65, the winningest driver in Sports Car Club of America history, smashed his Nissan 300ZX Turbo into a concrete barrier on the third lap of the 100-mile Trans Am race on a downtown street course.
