Garvey Talks With Dodgers, Agrees to Meet Again in Next Few Weeks

Share

Free agent Steve Garvey, who wants to return to the Dodgers for the final year of his career, met with Executive Vice President Fred Claire at Dodger Stadium Tuesday.

Did they reach an agreement?

“We spoke in general terms and agreed to talk again, probably in the next two or three weeks,” Claire said.

Otherwise? Nothing definitive, Claire said.

“We talked about Steve’s rehabilitation (from shoulder surgery) and our situation at first base. He’s aware that we have a number of players there and recognizes that we face some difficult decisions.”

Claire listed Pedro Guerrero, Franklin Stubbs, Mickey Hatcher, Danny Heep and Len Matuszek as potential first basemen.

Would Garvey accept a part-time role?

“From what he’s said previously and what he said today, I think so,” Claire said. “The way we examine (the Garvey situation), the moves we make have to be aimed at giving us the strongest possible club and nothing else. At this point, we have to see what the next few weeks bring.”
