Los Angeles composers Carl Stone and Dorothy Stone won with “Hop Ken” and “Wizard Ball,” respectively, in the 1988 Freeman Composers Competition. University of Texas at San Antonio composer Reed Holmes earned a prize with a Toccata for piano and tape delay.

Each composer received a $1,000 prize. In addition, their works, chosen from 78 entries, will be performed at the CalArts Contemporary Music Festival in March. “Hop Ken” was also heard Saturday at the SCREAM Festival at UCLA.

The competition, administered by CalArts, was initiated in 1986--though no winner was declared that year--by local arts patron Betty Freeman. The annual composition competition is open to residents of the Western United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, under 35 years old.

The jury was chaired by Frans van Rossum, dean of the CalArts School of Music, and also included composers Paul Lansky, Daniel Lentz and Morton Subotnick.
