Pasadena : Head Start Classes to Open

The Foothill area Head Start program will begin offering classes for pre-kindergarten children Monday. The federally funded program for low- and moderate-income families normally operates from August to June, but was delayed this year because a new agency was selected to operate the program.

The $1.5-million Head Start contract was awarded in October to Community Housing Services, a nonprofit group based in South Pasadena.

The first of four programs will open Monday at King’s Villages, 1141 N. Fair Oaks Ave. A second program, Audubon, at 725 W. Altadena Drive, Altadena, is expected to open Dec. 1. Programs at two other locations, 130 Penn St., and 363 E. Villa St., are expected to start after the first of the year.

Children who will be in kindergarten next year and were born between Dec. 3, 1982, and Dec. 2, 1983, will be given priority.

The program is intended to give disadvantaged children a boost so they can do well when they start school. It serves children 3 to 5 years old whose families meet certain income requirements. Maximum income for a family of four is $11,200 a year, said Denise Knight, director of Pasadena Head Start.
