Local News in Brief : Hart Appointed to U.S. Panel on Social Studies
State Sen. Gary K. Hart (D-San ta Barbara) has been appointed to a national commission that is to develop recommendations for improving social studies education in the United States.
Hart, a former social studies teacher who chairs the state Senate Education Committee, joins 39 other educators and public officials who will undertake a three-year review of curriculum and teaching methods.
The commission was organized by the American Historical Assn., the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the National Council for Social Studies and the Organization of American Historians. It will hold its first meeting in Dallas this week and report its findings in 1990.
Hart, whose 18th District includes part of Woodland Hills and Topanga Canyon, is one of three lawmakers on the commission. The others are U. S. Sen. Bill Bradley (D-N.J.) and Rep. Lindy Boggs (D-La.). Bill Honig, California’s superintendent of public instruction, was also appointed.
