CAMPAIGN ’88 : Union Breaks the Ice
Although AFL-CIO policy discourages member unions from making political endorsements, the Iowa state employees’ union has thrown its support in the Democratic presidential race to Dukakis.
Don McKee, president of Council 61 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, predicted that the endorsement, the first made by a major Iowa union, will kick off a wave of similar moves by other unions.
The AFSCME local bargains for 30,000 state and local government workers, although only about 7,600 actually belong, McKee said.
