A fourth-grade teacher at an elementary school in Alhambra today was named California’s 1988 Teacher of the Year.

Lorna Mae Nagata, 40, who teaches at Fremont Elementary School, was chosen from among 200,000 teachers in the state. In announcing the honor in Los Angeles, state Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig described Nagata as “a very good representative of the quality of California teachers.” This year, for the first time, the honor included a cash award of $15,000, provided by Teachers Management & Investment Corp. of Newport Beach, an investment firm for educators.
