Australia to Forbid Smoking on Airliners

SYDNEY, Australia —
Australia will soon become the second country to ban cigarette smoking during domestic airline travel, the Cabinet has decided in Canberra.
The decision announced by the Communications Minister Gareth Evans takes effect Dec. 1, banning smoking for the 12 million people who fly on domestic airlines each year.
Evans said the government is confident of strong public support and said that Canada and the United States are moving in the same direction. Only China has a similar ban.
