Local News in Brief : Drunk Driver Given 2-Year Term for Death
A Van Nuys man who pleaded guilty to drunk driving was sentenced Thursday to two years in prison for an accident that led to the death of a San Fernando Valley man.
Van Nuys Superior Court Judge C. Bernard Kaufman sentenced Robert Arlen Gillette, 34, who pleaded guilty Sept. 14 to driving under the influence of alcohol and causing bodily injury to Robert Greenburg, 36. Greenburg died Sept. 9.
Gillette’s car crossed the center lines in the 17000 block of Saticoy Street and hit Greenburg’s car Feb. 24, police said.
Gillette had a blood-alcohol level of .27%, according to the probation report. A person is considered legally drunk when his blood-alcohol level reaches .10%.
Greenburg, who suffered multiple injuries, was taken to Northridge Hospital, where he remained in a coma until his death, records show. Gillette was treated at the hospital for cuts.
Gillette pleaded guilty to the lesser charges rather than face manslaughter charges, the probation report said. Gillette had no record of previous arrests, Deputy Dist. Atty. John Spillane said.
