Local News in Brief : Countywide : Agencies Will Share $74,000 Homeless Grant

Orange County has been picked to receive a grant for $74,638 to be distributed among emergency food and shelter programs operated by local service organizations.

The selection was made by a board of national voluntary organizations and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The board has the responsibility to distribute $10 million appropriated by Congress to expand food and shelter programs in areas throughout the country.

United Way of America will provide the administrative staff for the program.

Under terms of the grant, local governmental or private voluntary organizations participating in the program must be nonprofit, audited annually, be an equal opportunity group and have demonstrated the ability to deliver emergency food or shelter.

The local board is made up of representatives from the United Way of Orange County, Orange County Board of Supervisors, American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, Jewish Federation of Orange County, Salvation Army, Orange County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, Casa Teresa, Orange County Community Development Council, Orange County Human Relations Commission, Newport Mesa-Irvine Interfaith Council, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Orange County Department of Social Services, Orange County Health Care Agency, League of Women Voters of Orange County, and Irvine.
