Local News in Brief : Prosecutor to Stand Trial

Share

Los Angeles Assistant City Atty. Betsy Mogul was ordered Friday to stand trial on criminal charges that she falsified Department of Motor Vehicles records to avoid paying about $600 in fees when buying a used Mercedes.

Mogul was directed to appear for arraignment next Thursday. If convicted, she faces up to four years in prison.

Mogul, 40, is accused of committing perjury in 1983 when she signed DMV documents saying she bought the 1972 Mercedes from her father. Automobile transfers among family members are exempt from the DMV fees. The man who sold Mogul the car, Arthur G. Smith, is not her father.

Smith and Mogul’s husband, William E. Leasure, are awaiting trial on charges that they conspired to have Smith’s wife murdered. They are also facing trial in connection with a $1.5-million yacht theft ring.
