Sydney Biddle Barrows, a young socialite descended from one of the Mayflower pilgrim families, rocked New York in 1984 by being arrested for running a “high-class escort service.”

As details of the case unfolded in newspapers over the next year, the press tagged Biddle the “Mayflower Madam,” and that in turn is the title of a two-hour TV movie about Biddle airing Sunday on CBS (9-11 p.m., Channels 2 and 8).

Candice Bergen stars as the “Mayflower Madam” who turns to her new career after losing her job in New York’s garment industry. Chris Sarandon is cast as her romantic interest, and Broadway musical star Chita Rivera, in a dramatic role, plays Biddle’s ally and no-nonsense lawyer.
