Former House Speaker Thomas P. (Tip) O’Neill Jr. left a Washington hospital and was admitted to a Boston hospital for rectal surgery, hospital officials said. O’Neill is scheduled to undergo the surgery in several days after a series of tests, said Kathleen O’Donnell, a spokeswoman for Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Doctors examining O’Neill declined to comment on the tests or O’Neill’s condition, but a statement may be released today, she said. Recent reports in Boston newspapers have said that O’Neill has cancer of the large intestine.
