Protesters smashed a dozen television sets with clubs at the University of California, Berkeley, complaining that Americans have become so attached to their TVs that they “don’t live their lives anymore.” Hundreds watched as six people reduced the television sets to rubble. One organizer who identified herself only as Camille said it was also a protest against the media’s control of information. The smash-in began when someone tossed a television set onto the steps of Sproul Hall from a second-floor balcony. Campus spokesman Ray Colvig said the protesters staged the event over university objections, and he indicated that disciplinary action may be taken.
