Two gang members were booked for assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly shooting at an off-duty deputy marshal as he drove on West 123rd Street in South Los Angeles, authorities said Monday.

One bullet hit the car of Devery Wayne Jones, 25, a deputy marshal at Compton Municipal Court, as he drove past a group of men about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Jones was not injured. He stopped at a phone and reported the shooting to sheriff’s deputies, who found the men. Jones identified two of them, Dwayne Fergerson, 18, and a 17-year-old youth, whose name was not released, deputies said.

Deputy Kathryn Nielsen said the shooting will be added to the list of roadway shootings and other violent incidents involving drivers on Los Angeles County freeways and streets. More than 50 outbreaks of violence have been reported since June 20, including several fatal shootings, according to the California Highway Patrol.
