Whalers Rally From 3 Goals Down and Earn a 3-3 Tie With Canadiens
Stewart Gavin’s short-handed goal with 37 seconds left in the third period capped a three-goal comeback and lifted the Hartford Whalers into a 3-3 tie with the Montreal Canadiens in the only National Hockey League game Monday night.
Mike McPhee scored twice in the first six minutes of the second period and assisted on a goal by Chris Nilan less than five minutes later to boost the Canadiens into a 3-0 lead.
Mike Millar got the Whalers on the scoreboard at 14:55 of the second period with his first goal of the season.
Brent Peterson tucked in the puck from the side of goaltender Patrick Roy to make it 3-2 at 13:21 of the third period.
The Whalers’ Dana Murzyn was penalized with 1:41 left, but Gavin, stationed 10 feet from Roy, backhanded the puck over the goal line to produce the tie.
In addition to losing the game, the Whalers lost Kevin Dineen, who limped to the dressing room early in the third period after injuring his knee.
