After being held at the University of Georgia for a dozen years, the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. tennis championships will be moved to the Grand Champions Resort at Indian Wells, Calif., in 1989, the Division I Men’s Tennis Committee decided.

Then the tournament will be rotated among several sites.

The change followed vigorous protests against the University of Georgia’s home-court advantage at Athens, Ga.

Dick Leach, tennis coach at USC, complained so bitterly about it after his top-rated team lost to Georgia in the semifinals this year that he was reprimanded by the NCAA.

USC will be the official host of the Indian Wells tournament.

Georgia, which has won two national championships in the last three years, plays host to the tournament next year.
