The Bilingual Foundation for the Arts is protesting a “termination of funding” from the California Arts Council, which this year denied the Los Angeles-based theater troupe’s request for a grant for the first time in 11 years. Foundation organizers said they think the council representatives didn’t see enough of the troupe’s productions during the 1986-87 season to properly evaluate their grant. However, a council spokesman said the acting, directing and the writing of the troupe’s productions, which are presented in both Spanish and English, have “received criticisms from council members over time that don’t seem to have been addressed.” The foundation received $6,800 for the 1986-87 fiscal year, after informally appealing a council decision not to award it any funds.
