Franklin D. Richards, a senior member of the Mormon Church’s First Quorum of the Seventy, has died. He was 86.

Church spokesman Jerry Cahill said Richards died about 9 p.m. Friday.

Richards had been recovering from surgery after the October session of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ general conference.

He had been a member of the presidency of the First Quorum of the Seventy since its creation Oct. 1, 1976. Before that, he served 16 years as an assistant to the Council of the Twelve.

Richards served as Northwestern States Mission president in Portland, Ore., in the late 1950s and was appointed an assistant to the governing Council of the Twelve at the church’s October, 1960, semiannual general conference.

As a general authority, Richards served as an area mission supervisor, was a member of the board of directors of Zions Security Corp. and represented the church in various business assignments.
