Philip A. Colman, 75, retired director of export sales development for Lockheed and the aerodynamicist who helped design Lockheed’s P-80. Colman was credited with convincing NATO nations to choose Lockheed’s F-104G Super Starfighter as their main air defense weapon, which resulted in 1960 in the purchase of 1,075 of the Mach-2 planes at a price of $1.5 billion, then the largest sale of its kind in NATO history.
