South Gate : Ground Broken for School

Share

Construction is expected to start this month on a $12.9-million elementary school, which Los Angeles Unified School District officials hope will help ease overcrowded conditions in the Southeast area.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held Tuesday for South Gate Elementary School No. 1, which is yet to be named. The school will be built on a 5.4-acre site on San Miguel Avenue between Missouri Avenue and Tweedy Boulevard.

The school, which will take about 19 months to complete, will include 37 classrooms for more than 1,000 students. It is one of four elementary schools planned for the South Gate area. One school already is under construction on Montara Avenue south of Tweedy and is scheduled to open in March. Two others are in planning stages.
