Local News in Brief : Stanton : Driver Arrested in 100-M.P.H. Chase

A driver was arrested after leading police on a 100-m.p.h. police chase Wednesday morning from Stanton to Los Angeles County, but his passenger escaped when their car crashed and he commandeered another one at gunpoint, authorities said.

Donald Vincent Remmel, 36, of Westminster was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property, reckless driving and evading arrest, said Stanton Police Sgt. Steve Kelch. Remmel was to be booked into County Jail on Wednesday night in lieu of $10,000 bail, Kelch said. No one was hurt in the chase, but an accomplice was still at large Wednesday evening.

The chase started at 8:17 a.m., Kelch said, and the suspect drove at speeds of 70 m.p.h. through Stanton, Anaheim and Fullerton, then turned onto the Riverside Freeway.

At speeds of 100 m.p.h., he raced northbound up the San Gabriel River Freeway, zigzagging across the lanes before running off the freeway in Norwalk, knocking over a fence and crashing into a utility pole, Kelch said.

The passenger escaped on foot and then stole a Norwalk family’s car at gunpoint, Kelch said. Inside the crashed car, stolen from an Anaheim car dealer, police found about 400 hypodermic needles, Kelch said.
